Shift Explained: Tempo Cheats with Legendary Glimmers
Shift is one of Lorcana's most powerful and most misunderstood keywords. Used well, it lets you drop a game-warping character a turn or two ahead of schedule — a tempo cheat that can simply win games.
How Shift works
A card with Shift N says: you may play this character for its Shift cost (N) by placing it on top of a character you have in play with the same name. The new version inherits the old one's state — including any damage and whether it's exerted — and it can act immediately (the ink is already dry).
So if you have Some Character in play and draw Some Character – Legendary Version with Shift 4, you can pay just 4 ink instead of, say, 7, and upgrade on the spot.
Why it's so strong
Two reasons:
- Discount. You skip part of the cost — paying the Shift number instead of the full ink cost.
- Speed. The shifted character can quest or challenge the same turn, ignoring summoning sickness. You get a fresh, powerful body acting now.
That combination is a massive tempo swing: you spend less ink and get an immediate threat, often a full turn ahead of when you "should" have it.
Building a Shift deck
- Run the base versions. Shift only works if you have a same-named character to shift onto. Include the cheaper "shift target" cards so your big payoffs are live.
- Mind consistency. You need both halves in hand often enough to matter. Run multiples and a little card draw to find them.
- Have a backup plan. Sometimes you won't draw the pair. Make sure the base characters are fine on their own and the payoffs are castable at full price in a pinch.
Reading the odds
Shift decks live and die by drawing two specific halves together. Before you commit, it's worth checking how often that happens — pop your copy counts into the draw odds calculator. The redundancy you need to make Shift reliable is exactly why these decks run so many copies of their key pieces.
